Brownie and JC, aka Ken Brown and John Charlton originally from Brisbane, go right back to the early 60s surfing, but it was in the late 70's they made their mark on Surf media reporting. Initially on the radio but by the 90s were able to combine both Radio and TV gigs together.
JC had worked for Dick Van Straalen surfboards during the 70s while Ken Brown was filing radio reports in Sydney which led to live morning TV reports on the 10 Network Good Morning Australia. In the 80s Ken Brown moved back to Brisbane to start the incredibly successful Brownie Coastwatch report combining beach, surf, dive and fishing reports.
At the same JC was hired by the Triple M Radio Network to file their surf reports for Sunny Coast and Gold Coast. They were the first mainstream media surf reporters paving the way for future reporters like Mark Warren, myself and many others. But it was in the 90s they hit paydirt with the hugely successful Brownies Coastwatch segment on a Saturday afternoon where JC produced bios on up and coming Qld grommies like Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson.
The Brownie/ JC partnership was a marriage made in Surf TV heaven. They were the true trailblazers of this whole new style of presenting surfing on television which is as relevant today as it was at the time. Looking forward to being MC for these lovable larrikins and fair dinkum legends, my surf media mentors, as they share their classic surf talk adventures at SurfWorld on Wed 8th August.
Don't miss these iconic characters and their amazing surf tales and how they opened a big backdoor on the surfing sporting lifestyles. It will be a fun talk story night together with the legendary Coastwatch clips bound to be a barrel of laughs and enjoyable entertaining evening!
