Surf World Gold Coast is proud to host the Peruvian Cultural Surfing Tour presented by Gold Coast World Surfing Reserve and in conjunction with the 2016 Bleach* Festival. This tour features Felipe Pomar, Peru’s first World Champion.
Pomar created history in 1965 when he became Peru’s first World Surfing Champion defeating Australian junior sensation Nat Young in double overhead surf at Punta Rocas, Peru. This emphatic win catapulted Pomar into the big wave arena of Hawaii where he moved to establish himself further as a highly respected big wave champion at Makaha, Waimea Bay and Sunset Beach.
Arguably the fittest surfer on the planet, at 72 years of age, Felipe is a highly respected big wave rider who is still fearlessly charging 30ft waves today. Pomar is one of surfing’s great enigmas having travelled the globe in pursuit of huge uncrowded waves and not seeking the limelight. He has the distinction of having surfed and survived a tsunami in the late 70’s during an earthquake off the Coast of Peru where he and another friend were swept out to sea and the only way back in was to ride the monster swell.
Felipe is an incredible inspiration with more than a few stories to tell.
Felipe will be joined by fellow Peruvians Carlos Antonio Ferrer, Roberto Muelas Meza and Carlos Ucanan “Huevito” from Huanchaco, Peru the home of the Caballito de Totora reed boards used for fishing and surfing for the last 5,000 years. While here Felipe, Carlos, Roberto and Huevito, who are all on the Huanchaco World Surfing Reserve Committee, will attend the Gold Coast WSR dedication ceremony.
Lobitos “Double Barrel” film will also be screened followed by a discussion panel including the full cast – Angie Davis, Harold Dustin Hollick and Rhian Slapp, alongside the delegates from Peru, to discuss the film journey, the Juntos Por Las Playa Del Norte project that is inducting the areas of Cabo Blanco and next Lobitos, into a marine studies plan to have the breaks protected by law, and our future goal of having these areas inducted as WSRs.
