Grand Night At The Museum

Surfing legends Darren Handley and Rusty Miller were featured speakers at a special Grand Night at the Museum hosted by Gold Coast Surf World on 7 November.

Miller earned a reputation riding the big waves at Sunset Beach, Waimea and Pipeline in the 1960s and was a successful competitive surfer, winning the USA open in 1965. He now owns his own surf school in Byron Bay and has given lessons to many novices including supermodel Elle McPherson.

Handley is a Gold Coast local shaping legend renowned for making some of the fastest, most responsive boards in the world. His boards are ridden by many of the best surfers in the world including Mick Fanning and Stephanie Gilmore.

Rusty and Darren represent two different eras but with a common bond of pushing the limits while respecting the ocean, said Surf World Gold Coast Chairman Mal Sutherland.

It was fascinating to hear their thoughts on how surfing performance has improved and where it is headed.
