Covering what Crockett terms “the other side of surfing”, the book focuses predominantly on the 1960s and 1970s and includes 90 contributors and over 1000 historic images.
The book is a sequel to his award-winning 2005 publication “Switchfoot” and has a heavy leaning toward the non-competitive side of surfing.
Gold Coasters Peter Drouyn and Mal Sutherland are among the many featured surfing identities in the book.
Drouyn is acknowledged as a visionary figure who invented the man-on-man surfing heats, while Sutherland provided photos and some personal insights into the Kirra surf scene of the 1950s and 1960s.
Sutherland, who is currently the Chairman of Surf World Gold Coast, is enthusiastic about the book.
“It is one of those books that should be on every surfer’s bookshelf. It oozes history and provides a snapshot into a significant era for the sport,” he said.
“The photos and stories in the book also paint a vivid picture of what the Gold Coast surfing scene was like in those early days.”
As a special festive season gesture, admission to the event is by gold coin donation and includes a tour of the museum.
