A great opportunity to mix and meet with other people interested in wooden boards and hear from some very talented individuals who build them. Wooden boards come in many shapes and styles of construction. Tom Wegener, Roger Hall and Mike Connor will give a brief overview of their various methods of board construction and experiences. This will be followed by an open question and answer forum with the guys. A sample of what will be on display at the Wooden Board Day in the park at Currumbin Alley the next day.

Tom Wegener

An expatriate Californian lawyer turned surfboard shaper transplanted into the hills behind Noosa at Cooroy. He has spent the last 10 plus years building wooden boards and researching and finessing his love affair with the ancient Hawaiian Alaia finless boards.” I hope the eyes of other shapers will be opened to the possibilities of applying the oldest methods in the world to today’s cutting edge technologies. "Historically in surfing, people have looked for lighter, faster technologies, thinking the holy grail is somewhere in carbon fibre and lighter, stronger materials. "But my approach is to look as far back as we possibly can at the few surviving boards from the ancient Hawaiians and study what Captain Cook and his crew watched when they saw surfing for the first time, and draw inspiration from that." Last year Surfing Magazine voted Tom “Shaper of the Year”. A great honour and recognition of his exploration into the heritage and roots of surfing that has inspired a new wave of innovation into this sport. " Wood is Good".

Roger Hall

A Kiwi with over 30 years of shaping boards in every shape and style, who has a well know reputation for innovation and quality. Roger has incorporated wood in to the handmade boards he builds for many years. Whether it is multiple stringers, nose and tail blocks, or beautiful inlays, Roger is a master of it all. He has always had a healthy supply of various timbers on hand and loves to combine them wherever possible. A recent quote from Slide magazine sums up Roger very well. "Roger’s enthusiasm and passion for finely crafting something more akin to a work of art is strongly evident. It would be a safe bet to say the prospect of bettering his craft is admirably motivating him much more so than the almighty dollar."

Mike Connor

A passionate woodworker who hails from Corndale, located west of Byron Bay. Mike’s interest in working with wood began some 25 years ago when he began experimenting and building various items as a hobby. He is largely self-taught although the opportunity to attend classes with local world-renowned cabinetmaker, Geoff Hannah, added inspiration and refinement to his creations. His love of wood has resulted in him exploring and collecting local and exotic timbers to the point of filling a large shed. For the past 10 years Mike has pursued a full time career as a craftsman making various customised pieces ranging from furniture to woodwork benches, wooden tools and workshop jigs to make outcomes more accurate. Some teaching has followed and his desire is to share knowledge rather than keep it secret. Today he specialises in crafting ukuleles and guitars as well as surfboards. This interest in surfboards has seen Mike link up with Bob McTavish to help recreate some of Bob’s well-known designs in wood.

The Art of Surfing

by admin ~ June 1st, 2010

Surf World Gold Coast is inviting surfboard manufacturers, graphic artists and schools to submit entries for an upcoming exhibition planned to open on September 3rd titled The Art of Surfing.

Graphic art and murals have long been a feature on surfboards and it is not often these creators of original artwork are given the opportunity to display  their talents.

From the early 1900s’  when surfers painted or burnt their names on their boards to the1940s’and1950s’ when images of girlfriends, Marilyn Monroe or barber pole stripes were in vogue, to the psychodelia of the 70s’ and 80s’ and the computer generated art of today, the surfboard has been a palette for artists. This exhibition will give them the venue to showcase their work.

The exhibition will be open to both existing and new works so entries will be accepted from all decades. Available space will limit the display to approximately 50 boards so interested exhibitors should advise of their intention to participate as early as possible. A three month lead-in time has been allowed for the preparation of new works.

Entry forms are available from the Museum at Level 1/ 35 Tomewin St, Currumbin Ph55256380 or can be downloaded from the Events page.

Surfing Divas to be honoured at SurfWorld Gold Coast

by Karen ~ March 16th, 2010

Two special events honouring legendary women surfers will be held at Surf World Gold Coast this month.

The Divas of Surfing exhibition will be officially opened on Thursday, 18 March from 10.30am and a special Divas of Surfing evening will be held on Wednesday, 24 March from 6.00pm.

Both events focus on four women who had pivotal places in surfing history: Kathy Kohner Zuckerman, Phyllis O’Donell, Layne Beachley and Stephanie Gilmore.

Kathy Kohner Zuckerman was the original Gidget surfer girl and was once named the seventh most influential surfer in history. Her fictionalised life on the beach at Malibu was the subject of the classic 1957 book “Gidget” and the first ever Hollywood surf movie. Subsequent Gidget movies, musicals and TV series heralded the rise of surfing into popular culture.

Born in Sydney, Phyllis O’Donell began surfing at age 23 and was the surprise winner of the first ever World Surfing Championships in 1964. For her efforts, she was rewarded with $250, a surfboard and numerous packets of cigarettes. Nevertheless, at a time when the sport was dominated by men, Phyllis was a trailblazer for future generations of female surfers.

Since becoming a professional surfer at the age of 16, Layne Beachley has achieved a record-breaking career. Layne has won a record seven world titles, including an amazing six titles in a row from 1998-2003. She has also appeared in numerous surf movies, and since 2006 has staged the richest event on the women’s surfing tour at Sydney’s Manly Beach.

The first rookie to win an ASP world title in 2007, Stephanie Gilmore has become the dominant force in women’s surfing. She has won the last three world championships and is probably the most recognisable female surfer in the world today.

“Women’s surfing often does not get the recognition it deserves and the Divas exhibition and Divas evening will focus attention on some fantastic female surfing achievers,” said Surf Word Gold Coast Chairman Mal Sutherland.

The Divas exhibition features a rare collection of trophies, photos, rash shirts and surfboards.  Additionally, profiles of all 13 Australian women who have been world champions since Phyllis O’Donell in 1964 are included (full list appended to this release).

The Divas of Surfing evening will feature addresses from all four surfing divas as well as canapés and refreshments.

“This is a really historic event that brings together two pioneers of women’s surfing with two current legends of the sport,” said Sutherland. “It should provide a real insight into the past and future of women’s surfing.”

Supported by Southern Cross University, Darcy Surfboards Currumbin, Connecting Southern Gold Coast, Gold Coast City Council and Australia’s Surfing Life magazine, the Divas evening promises to be an unforgettable event for surfing buffs. Tickets must be pre-purchased and are available for $35 from Surf World Gold Coast at Tomewin Street, Currumbin or by phoning (07) 5525 6380.

Switch-Foot II Book Launch at Surf World

by admin ~ December 16th, 2009

Switch-Foot II Book Launch

The Gold Coast launch of Switch-Foot II, an iconic surf book by Andrew Crockett, was held at Surf World Gold Coast in December 2009.

Covering what Crockett terms “the other side of surfing”, the book focuses predominantly on the 1960s and 1970s and includes 90 contributors and over 1000 historic images.

The book is a sequel to his award-winning 2005 publication “Switchfoot” and has a heavy leaning toward the non-competitive side of surfing.

Gold Coasters Peter Drouyn and Mal Sutherland are among the many featured surfing identities in the book.

Drouyn is acknowledged as a visionary figure who invented the man-on-man surfing heats, while Sutherland provided photos and some personal insights into the Kirra surf scene of the 1950s and 1960s.

Sutherland, who is currently the Chairman of Surf World Gold Coast, is enthusiastic about the book.

“It is one of those books that should be on every surfer’s bookshelf. It oozes history and provides a snapshot into a significant era for the sport,” he said.

“The photos and stories in the book also paint a vivid picture of what the Gold Coast surfing scene was like in those early days.”

As a special festive season gesture, admission to the event is by gold coin donation and includes a tour of the museum.
